The Derby Festival Lucky 31

Derby Lucky 31

We’ve been flying with our Lucky 31s for the major flat meetings so far this year so we’re going to be looking to follow them up with this cracker for the highly anticipated Derby Festival at Epsom this weekend. We’ll be including a selection from all five of the group races including the Coronation Cup, Investec Oaks, Princess Elizabeth Stakes, Diomed Stakes and The Derby. Our picks range from 4/1 up to 12/1 so our best bit of advice would be to turn this into a 50p e/w (£31 total stake) Lucky 31!

02/06/17 – Coronation Cup – Epsom 15:10

Our Selection: Hawkbill 12/1

Recent Form Figures: 51

The Godolphin owned Charlie Appleby trained 4-year-old HAWKBILL will be looking to kick off our Epsom Lucky 31 in style in the Coronation Cup as he looks to follow up his impressive two length victory in the Al Rayyan Stakes at Newbury in mid may. The colt, who has raced 13 times since making his disappointing debut as a 2-year-old back in April 2015, will be hoping to replicate some of his 2015/16 form where he went on a six race win streak which included a thoroughly impressive win in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown last July. He dismantled what looked to be a fairly decent six runner field at Newbury last month and we believe at odds of 12/1 at Paddy Power, he could be a massive threat to early favourite Highland Reel.

02/06/17 – Investec Oaks – Epsom 16:30

Our Selection: Horseplay

Recent Form: 11

Now for one of the less exposed selections for our Lucky 31. Much has been spoken about the Aidan O’Brien trained Rhododendron for the The Oaks and rightly so because she is a terrific filly but we can’t help but believe that Andrew Balding could just have a little magic trick up his sleeve which goes by the name of HORSEPLAY. The 3-y-o broke her maiden last year with an emphatic 13 length victory on her second appearance on a racecourse which she then followed up with victory in the Listed Tweenhills Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket at the start of May. She showed tremendous staying power to hold off the late efforts of Isabel De Urbina and if she continues to progress from her maiden run she could quite well be the thorn to pop Aidan O’Brien’s Oaks balloon. You can get her at best priced 12/1 at Betfair.

03/06/17 – Prince Elizabeth Stakes – Epsom 14:35

Our Selection: Czabo

Recent Form: 21

For what looks to be a fairly competitive Prince Elizabeth Stakes to kick off the group races on Saturday, we’ve taken a punt and gone for 7/1 shot CZABO. Despite being known as a fairly inconsistent filly who has her good days and bad, she got up ahead of Group 2 winner Somehow to claim Group 3 victory at Naas at the back end of March and now she has been rested and clearly aimed at this race, and considering there is no horse really grabbing the antepost market by the scruff of it’s neck, we believe she could be a massive player. You can get her best priced 7/1 at SkyBet.

03/06/17 – Diomed Stakes – Epsom 15:10

Our Selection: Sovereign Debt

Recent Form Figures: 211

A big player on the all weather over the winter, the Ruth Carr trained SOVEREIGN DEBT will turn his hand to the green stuff at Epsom and will also be looking to hopefully take our Derby Lucky 31 to 4/4 in the Diomed Stakes on Saturday afternoon. Having finished inside the places in 10 of his last 12 races, it’s safe to say he’s one of the most consistent horses on the circuit. An impressive Group 2 victory at Sandown at the end of April on his return to turf only enhanced his chance for the Diomed Stakes and it’s no wonder the bookies have him as joint 3rd fav to claim his second group victory of his extensive 50 race career so far. You can get him best priced 6/1 at SkyBet.

03/06/17 – The Derby – Epsom 16:30

Our Selection: Cracksman

Recent Form Figures: 11

Now for the big one, the most highly anticipated race of the British flat season, the all important Epsom Derby. It’s all set to be an absolute thriller with one of the most open fields in recent times set to storm the gallops of Epsom and provide what is inevitably going to be one of the races of the year. It’s a tough race to call but we’ve gone for the John Gosden trained CRACKSMAN to follow in the footsteps of his stablemate Golden Horn and claim Derby victory for the second time in three years for Gosden and owner Anthony Oppenheimer. The Frankel colt was all set to run in the Dante but was pulled out last minute due to concerns over the ground but after a nice schooling run at Breakfast With The Stars event around Epsom last week, we believe he will be the one to beat. The main contributing factor which makes us believe he’ll reign victorious on Saturday is course form. He is the only horse out of the field of 20 to have won at Epsom with only one other horse managing a place and that was Permian who finished behind Cracksman on that occasion. He’s bred for success and our opinion is that that is exactly what he will be getting come 16:40 on Saturday afternoon. He’s currently best priced 4/1 at Paddy Power.
