Day 3, Thursday Cheltenham Festival

Thursday at the Festival has two main races along with several other potentially exciting stretches too. The two races that people get most excited about on the day are the Stayers’ Hurdle and the Ryanair Chase.

Favourites, on day 3, traditionally have a great chance of achieving first place in the Stayers’ Hurdle race. Though, that said, check your tips wisely as the day can often throw in the odd highly priced winner.

Cheltenham Thursday’s itinerary consists of the following races:

1:30 JLT Novices Chase

This is a 2 mile 4-furlong race that trainers like to leave to the last minute in deciding whether or not to throw in their horse. This is generally down to ground considerations and the form of the competitors.

2:10 Pertemps Final Hurdle

A great race for the outsider, since 2000 there’s only been one favourite that has taken first spot. And, since 2003 there have only been two single figured priced horses that have come in first. The bookies like this race, so go evens on whoever you fancy at a high price…

2:50 Ryanair Chase

One of the newer races and since its inception there have been five favourite winners and nine winners out of twelve have been within the top three betting circles.

3:30 Stayers Hurdle

This has become one of the keynote races at the Festival and usually attracts a good number of ante post betters.

It’s a long-distance race suitable for quality racers who can handle the stretch and hurdles.

4:10 Festival Plate

This race offers great opportunities for the outsider bets as it’s only been conquered by a favourite once, since 2000.

4:50 Mares Novices Hurdle

Proven to be a popular race even though it’s one of the newest races at the Festival, coming in to being in 2016.
It’s a good grade 2 race offering fine winnings, so we can expect to see some good fillies going for this one.

5:30 Kim Muir Challenge Cup

Tough for betting on this race so be wary with your tips… Since 2002, four favourites have managed to take first prize and a few have come in at big prices too. Check the form for your favourites and make sure they are stayers as this one’s a tough race.
