Cartier Awards Winners Announced

Tuesday night saw the prestigious Carter Awards Ceremony to mark the end of the flat season and it was A P O’Brien who stole the show with his yard scooping five of the eight awards including the Carter/Telegraph Award Of Merit which was awarded to A P himself for his services to horse racing in what has been a terrific 2016 for him.

O’Brien’s biggest triumph of the season arguably came in the Prix De l’Arc De Triomphe where he claimed a 1-2-3 with his Ballydoyle filly FOUND finishing ahead of stable mates HIGHLAND REEL and ORDER OF ST GEORGE. FOUND claimed the Older Horse Award at the event after finishing 2nd in six of the seven Group 1 races she ran in this year and finishing 1st in the other one, the Prix De l’Arc De Triomphe. ORDER OF ST GEORGE also picked up the award for the Stayer Of The Year after claiming two group wins out of four this year with the 4-y-o placing in the other two.

However, it was up to another O’Brien trained horse to steal the spotlight at the award show. 1,000 Guineas, Oaks, Nassau Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner MINDING was the real star of the show picking up the Three Year Old Filly Award along with the most prestigious award of the evening, The Horse Of The Year award after a tremendous year for the 3-y-o.

Another Aiden O’Brien prospect CHURCHILL picked up the Two Year Old Colt award with the Two Year Old Filly award going to Wesley Ward’s once beaten American LADY AURELIA after her incredible seven length victory in the Queen Mary Stakes at Ascot in June. Jean-Claude Rouget’s ALMANZOR picked up the Three Year Old Colt award after getting up to win the both the Champion Stakes in Ireland and in England. Haydock Sprint Cup winner QUIET REFLECTION claimed the Sprinter Of The Year award beating off stiff competition from Limato, The Tin Man and Mecca’s Angel.

2016 has as expected been a terrific year for flat racing and we thoroughly look forward to 2017!
